Man killed after truck leaves H-1

A man was killed yesterday when the compact pickup truck he was driving veered off the Honolulu-bound lanes of H-1 Freeway near the Hickam and Nimitz Highway off-ramp and struck a concrete pillar supporting a bridge above.

According to initial reports, the collision occurred shortly after 5 a.m. and the man was alone in his truck.

Emergency services workers said the truck appeared to be an older Nissan model equipped with a camper top, which was torn off in the crash.

The truck's front end and right side were severely damaged and the driver, who was pinned inside, was declared dead at the scene.



Four charged in Kona kidnap, robbery

HILO, Hawai'i — Kona police have charged two men and two women for allegedly kidnapping and robbing an 18-year-old woman early Saturday in Kailua.

Police said the woman was standing at the corner of Ali'i Drive and Likana Lane at about 2 a.m. when she was lured to a green Honda sedan by an acquaintance. The woman told police she was forced into the car and taken to the Kealakehe area where she was beaten and robbed. The woman was released by her captors two hours later.

Police arrested the suspects Monday. All four were charged with second-degree robbery, kidnapping, third-degree assault and third-degree theft.

Leialoha Vela Mareko, 26, additionally was charged with six counts of second-degree reckless endangering and two counts of first-degree criminal property damage. Her bail was set at $29,500.

Bail for Luke K. Wong, 28, was set at $16,500, while bail for Joby K. Wong, 20, was set at $7,350.

The fourth suspect, Suzanne Ruggiero, 34, also was served with three outstanding bench warrants for contempt of court. Her bail was set at $16,500 for the kidnapping case and $900 for the contempt warrants.



Man arrested in stabbing of son

A 47-year-old Halawa man was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of his 19-year-old son.

Police said the man told them he was upset because his son was "blasting music" about 11 p.m. and drinking with friends. They said the father grabbed a knife, told the son's friends to leave and then began to struggle with his son during which the son was slashed on the shoulder.

Police arrived at the apartment on Kohomua Street and arrested the father.

The son was taken to The Queen's Medical Center and was listed in fair condition upon arrival.



Manager robbed, locked in cabinet

Police are looking for a man who robbed a downtown café about 1:45 a.m yesterday.

The night manager of Pauahi Coffee and Karaoke told police a man came into the shop at 152 Pauahi, demanded cash and threatened to shoot him unless he complied.

The manager said he did as he was told and that the robber locked him in a cabinet before leaving.

The manager was able to free himself and call police.
