Make way for Christmas parades

 •  Get into the spirit with these 12 holiday to-dos

Santa and his elves are ready for a series of Christmas parades through O'ahu communities, beginning today.

A Christmas parade may be coming to your community soon, with marching bands playing Christmas tunes and Santa tossing candies.

You know the drill: Santa and his helpers toss candies to youngsters; some parades are daytime, some are in the evening; some parades are larger — with marchers galore, plus floats and bands — so appropriate precautions should be observed. And expect temporary road closures, too.

The schedule:

• Today, 5:30 to 7 p.m., Liliha-Palama. Starts at United Church of Christ, on to Judd Street, Liliha Street, to King Street, ending at King and Kohou streets. With 100 marchers, eight vehicles and a band.

• Today, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Kalihi. Starts at Kalihi Union Church, on King Street to Mokauea Street, on to Dillingham Boulevard, Waiakamilo Road, School Street, Kalihi Street and ending at Kamehameha Shopping Center. With 100 marchers, 15 vehicles, two floats and three bands.

• Today, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Waikiki. Starts at Saratoga Road and Kalakaua Avenue, on Kalakaua to Monsarrat Avenue, ending at Kapi'olani Park. With 2,000 marchers, 40 vehicles and 10 bands.

• Saturday, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Wai'anae. Starts at Wai'anae Boat Harbor parking lot, on to Farrington Highway, finishing at Wai'anae Mall. With 1,000 marchers, 30 vehicles, 30 floats, 10 bands and three horse units.

• Saturday, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Hawai'i Kai. Starts at Kamiloiki Park, to Lunalilo Home Road, ending at Koko Marina Center. With 1,000 marchers, 30 vehicles and two bands.

• Sunday, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Ala Moana-Waikiki. A Toys for Tots caravan begins at Magic Island parking lot, continues on Ala Moana Park Drive to Ala Moana, on to Kalakaua Avenue, to Monsarrat Avenue and ending at Paki/Monsarrat Avenue. With 200 vehicles.

• Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m., Kaimuki. Starts at Saint Louis School, continues on Wai'alae Avenue to Koko Head Avenue. Featuring 2,000 marchers, 25 vehicles, three floats, five bands.

• Dec. 3, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Wahiawa. Starts at Ka'ala Elementary School, on to California Avenue, to Cane Street, ending at Center Street. With 300 marchers, 10 vehicles, two floats and two bands.

• Dec. 4, 9 to 10:30 a.m., Kane'ohe. Starts at Windward Mall, on to Kamehameha Highway, to Kane'ohe Bay Drive, ending at Castle High School. With 1,500 marchers, 30 vehicles, 20 floats and six bands.

• Dec. 4, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., North Shore. Starts at Pupukea Road and Kamehameha Highway, ending at Swanzy Beach Park. With five vehicles.

• Dec. 4, 6 p.m., downtown area. Starts at 'A'ala Park, proceeds on King Street, ending at the municipal area at where King, South and Alapa'i Streets meet. Part of the Honolulu City Lights events.

• Dec. 5, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Ala Moana/Kapahulu. Starts at Magic Island, on to Ala Moana, Kalakaua Avenue, to Monsarrat Avenue, to Diamond Head Road, ending at Kapi'olani Community College. A Street Bikers United Toys for Tots caravan, with 4,000 motorcyclists.

• Dec. 5, 4 p.m., Pearl City. Starts at Momilani Elementary School, proceeds to Ho'oki'eki'e Street, on to Ho'omoana Street, to Ho'olaule'a Street, ending at Pearl City Shopping Center. With 1,000 marchers, 20 vehicles and five floats.

• Dec. 10, 6 to 7 p.m., Hale'iwa. Starts at Weed Circle, on to Kamehameha Highway, through Hale'iwa town, ending at Hale'iwa Beach Park. With 200 marchers, 20 vehicles and two bands.

• Dec. 11, 9 to 11 a.m., 'Ewa Beach. Starts at 'Ilima Intermediate School, on to Fort Weaver Road, to Kuhina Street, to Hanakahi Street, to North Road, back on Fort Weaver Road, ending at 'Ilima Intermediate. With 1,800 marchers, 75 vehicles and 10 floats.

• Dec. 11, 10 to 11 a.m., Gentry Waipi'o. Starts a Gentry Waipi'o Shopping Center, to Waipi'o Uka Street, 'Uke'e Street, Ka Uka Boulevard, to Waipi'o Uka, ending at the Gentry Waipi'o Shopping Center. With 150 marchers, 12 vehicles, three floats and one band.

• Dec. 11, 10 to 11 a.m., Waimanalo. Starts at Waimanalo District Park, on to Kaka'ina Street, Mahailua Street, Kumuhau Street, Humuniki Street, Kalaniana'ole Highway, to Huli Street, ending at Waimanalo Beach Park. With 150 marchers, 38 vehicles, nine floats and four bands.

• Dec. 11, 6 to 7 p.m., Manoa. Starts at Noelani School, on to Woodlawn Drive, to Kolowalu Street, to East Manoa Road, to Lowrey Avenue, to Manoa Road, ending at Manoa Park. With 400 marchers, 15 vehicles, two floats and two bands.

• Dec. 18, 3 to 4 p.m., Makakilo/Kapolei. Starts at Kapolei High School, to Maluohai Street, to Kai'au Avenue, to Kamaaha Avenue, to Kealanani Avenue, to Farrington Highway, to Kamokila Boulevard, ending at the Consolidated Amusement Company parking lot. With 120 marchers, 20 vehicles, six floats and five bands.

• Dec. 18, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Makakilo. Starts at Umena/Kikaha streets, to Makakilo Drive, to Panana Street, to Makakilo Drive, to Nohohale Street, to Palailai Street, finishing at Palailai Street and Makakilo Drive. With two vehicles and two floats.
