Mexico's Rodriguez captures Deca-Man

Mario Rodriguez of Mexico won the Deca-Man Hawai'i world championship, finishing the event in 9 days, 2 hours, 38 minutes, 36 seconds.

The event, held over two weeks at Barbers Point, featured distances 10 times that of an ironman triathlon. The swim was 24 miles; the bike, 1,120 miles, and the run was 262 miles.

Giacomo Maritati of Italy took second in 9:13:54:13 and Brock McKinley of Australia finished third in 9:19:19:07. Guy Rossie of France placed fourth in 10:02:02:01.

About 18 of the 25 competitors who started the race are still participating in the event, which began Nov. 13 and is scheduled to end tomorrow. Three dropped out.

Florida's Rob Abcug and Atlanta's Eileen Steil are the only American participants.

Competitors can rest as needed.


ULTRAMAN

Athletes to compete in 320-mile contest

The 20th running of the Ultraman begins today on the Big Island. The Ultraman, which totals 320 miles over three days, is open to just 35 competitors, all by invitation.

The race begins today at 6:30 a.m. with a 6.2-mile ocean swim from Kailua Bay to Keauhou Bay, followed by a 90-mile bike ride from Keauhou Bay to Namakani Paio Park.

The second stage, which will start at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow, consists of a 171.4-mile bike ride from Volcanoes National Park to the Kohala Village Inn at Hawi.

Sunday's final stage begins at 6 a.m. at Hawi. It is a 52.4-mile run that will finish at the Old Airport State Park.

Each stage must be completed in 12 hours or less, with the swim needing to be finished under 5› hours. Participants who do not reach the finish lines in the time allotted will be disqualified.
