Tune in to the tube

There's a new take on the Charles Dickens classic: "A Christmas Carol: The Musical" hits the airwaves tomorrow night (8 p.m., NBC), starring Kelsey Grammer as Scrooge and Jason Alexander as Jacob Marley.

On DVD or VHS

Here are a few films that are sure to get you into the holiday mood:

"A Christmas Story": Hard to believe that this heart-warming and genuinely funny tale is already 21 years old. The Jean Shepherd story is told through the young hero, Ralphie (Peter Billingsley), who wants only a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Also starring Melinda Dillon as the nurturing mom and Darren McGavin as the frenzied dad.

"Elf": Last year's huge holiday hit stars Will Ferrell as a human who thinks he's one of Santa's helpers. Even if you're not wild about Ferrell, you'll find this comedy hard to resist.

"It's a Wonderful Life": The James Stewart/Donna Reed classic from 1946 is truly timeless. Downtrodden Stewart finds out how meaningful his life has been and how his absence would have brought ruin to those he loved.

"The Santa Clause": Tim Allen starts out as a jerky dad but redeems himself when he reluctantly takes over as Santa in this comic 1994 tale.

Music to your ears

A Hawaiian Christmas wouldn't be complete without playing or hearing a specific local favorite. Here are some must-haves, suggested by Advertiser entertainment writer Wayne Harada:

"O Holy Night," by Willie K. Such holy might in his voice. On "Willie Kalikimaka" (Mountain Apple).

"Christmas Long Ago," by the Sons of Hawai'i. Vintage, but still vibrant. On "Christmas Time With Eddie Kamae and the Sons of Hawai'i" (Hawai'i Sons).

"I Love Christmas," by The Makaha Sons. Who doesn't love this version? On "Christmas Day in Hawai'i Nei" (Poki Records).

"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," by Ho'okena. Says it all about the season. On "Home for the Holidays" (Ho'omau Inc.).

"Nu 'Oli," by the Brothers Cazimero. Joyful, but underrated. On "Cazimero Christmas Favorites" (Mountain Apple).

"Ave Maria," by Na Leo Pilimehana. The serious side of the yuletide. On "Christmas Gift" (NLP).

See it Live

Or get your musical inspiration in the live performance of Handel's "Messiah," 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Central Union Church (Beretania and Punahou streets). The concert features the church's Oratorio Choir and Handel Festival Chamber Orchestra; and soloists Catherine Goto, Leigh Ann Braley, Kalani Brady and Christopher Kelsey. It's free; donations accepted to defray the expenses of the orchestra. 941-0957.

And hear the Brothers Cazimero in person in a free concert of holiday tunes at 6 p.m. today at Kahala Mall's Center Court.

Forget the leftover turkey: Here's a recipe from Nora Krank (played by Jamie Lee Curtis), of the just-opened "Christmas with the Kranks" comedy film:

Holiday Egg Nog

6 eggs
6 tablespoons sugar
1 pint whipping cream, whipped
1 cup whiskey (optional)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Separate eggs. Beat whites stiff. In another bowl, beat yolks and add sugar, vanilla extract and whiskey (optional). Gently fold in whites and cream.

Diesel, Hanks tough it out on 'Sunset' screen

There's another pair of Sunset on the Beach events this weekend at Queen's Surf Beach in Waikiki. The festivals feature food booths, entertainment and films on the 30-foot screen; admission is free.

Tonight's movie is the sci-fi adventure film, "The Chronicles of Riddick," starring Vin Diesel as an anti-hero who's up against an evil master-race of creatures. Tomorrow's is "The Terminal," starring Tom Hanks as a foreigner who is forced to live at an airport.

Slack-key and flute masters meet for concert on Maui

On the Valley Isle, Keola Beamer and R. Carlos Nakai are teaming up for a cross-cultural concert at the McCoy Studio Theater of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Beamer, of course, is the Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning slack-key artist; Nakai is the world's premier Native American flutist.

Show time is 7:30 p.m. today (food and drinks available from 5:30 p.m.); tickets are $30 and $35. (808) 242-7469.

Here's a chance to get your copy of Eddie Kamae book autographed

If you haven't picked up a copy of James Houston and Eddie Kamae's new book, "Hawaiian Son: The Life and Music of Eddie Kamae," there's no better time than this weekend.

Houston and Kamae, right, will be signing books today 11 a.m. to noon, at Sam's Club Pearl Highlands, and from 2 to 3 p.m. at Native Books at Ward Centre. They'll be at Borders Books, Music and Cafe at Ward Centre tomorrow from 4 to 5 p.m.

The book will be on sale at the stores for $18.99 (regular $24.99). Houston and Kamae are donating all royalties to the Hawaiian Legacy Foundation. For more information, see www.hawaiianlegacy.com.

Now is the time for a free haircut

Ready to do a good deed for the holidays? Well, those of you who have a lot of hair — and we mean A LOT — can do a great deed by donating those locks in a hair drive tomorrow at Salon Bobbi & Guy at the Ward Warehouse.

Folks who donate 10 inches of hair or more will receive a free haircut by the salon stylists. The donations will be shipped to Locks of Love organization, which provides hair prosthetics for children who have auto-immune diseases or who are being treated for cancer. Please wash your hair tonight; clean and dry hair is best for donations.

There'll be entertainment and giveaways at the event, too.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
