Single-car crash on North Shore kills motorist

By David Waite

A man was killed yesterday when the white compact car he was driving veered across Kamehameha Highway, severed a utility pole and overturned, coming to rest near the Shark's Cove parking lot in Pupukea.

The fatal crash was one of two that occurred yesterday, bringing to three the number of traffic deaths on O'ahu this week.

A man was killed yesterday when a runaway garbage truck crashed on Farrington Highway at the Kapolei Shopping Center.

And a 44-year-old man was killed Wednesday when his truck ran off H-1 Freeway's Honolulu-bound lanes near the Nimitz off-ramp and struck a concrete bridge support.

Emergency service workers said it appeared that the car in Pupukea was headed toward Kahuku when the crash occurred about 4 a.m.

They said the car came to rest upside-down on the makai side of the road with the driver pinned inside and the fallen utility pole lying atop the crushed car.

The driver was declared dead at the scene.

Family members identified him as Carl Waiwaiole, 19.

"He was a hard worker. He was full of energy. He was always on the go," said Waiwaiole's 27-year-old sister, Kahea.

He was home for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend from his construction job on the Big Island.

In March 2003, Waiwaiole's cousin, Shannon Waiwaiole, and four passengers were killed when the car he was driving ran off Kamehameha Highway and crashed into a tree near Hale'iwa.

Yesterday's two traffic fatalities were the 58th and 59th of the year on O'ahu, compared with 74 during the same period last year.
