A 34-year-old woman was killed and four people injured in a two-car crash yesterday afternoon in Hamakua on the Big Island.
Police identified the victim as Aileen Purdy of Kapa'au in North Kohala. Two children, ages 3 and 14, in Purdy's car were taken to separate hospitals, but their conditions were not available.
Police said the accident occurred at about 1 p.m. near the 31-mile marker on the Hawai'i Belt Road in Hamakua.
Police said Purdy was driving a 2000 Toyota when her car struck a guardrail and then a concrete railing on the Kaholo Bridge.
The Toyota then crossed the centerline and collided with a Ford F-350 pickup truck driven by a 57-year-old Hilo man, police said.
The man and his wife, 55, were taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where they were treated and released.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Yesterday's fatality was the 38th on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 31 at the same time last year.
A 27-year-old woman told police she was sexually assaulted Thursday morning after accepting a ride home from a patron of the nightclub where she works.
The woman said the man began to assault her about 4:30 a.m. while they were traveling through the Aliamanu area in the man's car.
She said she struggled with the man, was finally able to get out of the car and called police after she made it home.
Two men have been charged in connection with separate stabbing incidents this week.
Ricky K. Teodosio, 36, was charged with attempted second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing Wednesday morning of his ex-girlfriend in Waipahu.
Teodosio turned himself in at the Waipahu police substation several hours after the 7:20 a.m. incident and also was charged with car theft. His bail has been set at $100,000,
In the other incident, Fermin Jose Carino Sr. of Halawa was arrested initially on suspicion of attempted murder but was charged with the lesser offense of second-degree assault in connection with an incident Tuesday in which his son's shoulder was slashed.
Police said Carino was upset because his son was "blasting music" about 11 p.m. and drinking with friends.
They said the father grabbed a knife, told the son's friends to leave and then began to struggle with his son during which the son was slashed on the shoulder.
Police arrived at the apartment on Kohomua Street and arrested Carino while his son was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition upon his arrival. Carino's bail was set at $15,000.
