Fisherman held in stabbing death

A 20-year-old man was stabbed to death about 12:30 a.m. today after an argument with another man on Pier 17 in downtown Honolulu.

Police arrested a 30-year-old man several hours later near Smith Street and Nimitz Highway as a suspect in the case.

Police homicide Lt. Bill Kato said the suspect and victim were drinking with two other men in the galley of the Kathleen II, a fishing boat that was tied up at Pier 17. The two men began to argue and went up on deck where the stabbing took place. The murder weapon has not been recovered, Kato said.

He said the two men are fishermen from Kiribati and are here on work visas.


Motorcyclist dies in crash on Maui

A motorcyclist was killed on Maui yesterday when he was hit by a truck while trying to cross Hana Highway at Pulehu Road.

Police said Gary Wayne Begley was riding his 1999 Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle on Pulehu Road and was crossing the Paia-bound lanes of Hana Highway when he was hit by a 2000 Ford F150 pickup truck traveling toward Paia.

Begley, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene.

The pickup driver, who was wearing a seat belt, and a front-seat passenger received minor injuries in the crash and were treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Maui County has recorded 18 traffic fatalities so far this year compared to 14 during the same period last year.

Investigators do not know yet if alcohol, drugs or speeding contributed to the crash.


Stolen vehicle's driver arrested

A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of car theft in Kalihi last night after a patrol officer saw the man driving a car with an expired safety sticker and the tax emblem missing from the license plate.

The officer stopped the driver at 9:30 p.m. and learned from dispatchers that the car, which belongs to a 40-year-old woman, had been reported stolen.

The driver was arrested and taken into custody.


Man accused of taking moped

A 29-year-old man was arrested about 12:20 p.m. yesterday on suspicion of stealing a moped.

Patrol officers were responding to a burglary call in Waikiki when they were notified by police dispatchers that a possible suspect in the burglary was seen speeding away on a yellow moped.

As officers were approaching the burglary scene, they saw a man on a yellow moped and followed him to a Waikiki park, where he jumped off the moped, ran and attempted to hide.

Police confirmed the moped had been reported stolen by a Waikiki woman. They eventually found the man who was riding it and arrested him.


Wahiawa man's car recovered

Acting on an anonymous tip, a Wahiawa police officer arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of car theft about 9:35 a.m. yesterday.

The tipster told police the car could be found in a specific area of Wahiawa.

The officer checked the area, saw the car and arrested the driver. The car was reported stolen by a Wahiawa man.
