Bank plaza to carry Dods' name

Advertiser Staff

The First Hawaiian Bank headquarters building that company chief executive Walter Dods helped design will bear the retiring leader's name on its outdoor plaza.

Directors of First Hawaiian parent BancWest Corp. announced the honor yesterday, dedicating the 24,000-square-foot plaza with water features and landscaping as Walter A. Dods Jr. Plaza.

The 30-story tower at the makai-diamondhead corner of King and Bishop streets was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, though Dods was intimately involved in planning the $175 million project completed in 1996.

"While it was being built, he enjoyed playing the role of sidewalk superintendent, visiting the construction site in a hard hat," said bank President Don Horner, who will succeed Dods as CEO at the end of this year. "It's very fitting that his name be associated with it in this way."
