THE LEFT LANE
'Kokoro' special extended

Advertiser Staff

Dozens of Advertiser readers inquired about how to get their hands on a copy of "Kokoro: Cherished Japanese Traditions in Hawai'i," after the first printing of the book sold out within hours. Members of the Japanese Women's Society of Honolulu book committee, who compiled the book, are taking orders for the second printing, due out in January, and will honor the $12 presale price if orders are postmarked on or before tomorrow. (After presale, books will sell for $17 at local bookstores.)

Send in an order form or on a plain paper list the number of books you are ordering and the order total with your check, made payable to Japanese Women's Society Foundation. Note that it's for the January shipment. Mail to JWSF-BOOKS, P. O. Box 3233, Honolulu, HI 96801. For more information, call 521-2175, 734-8709 or 949-3240.

'National Treasure' remains No. 1

"National Treasure" (pictured, Diane Kruger and Nicolas Cage) continued to strike box-office gold, taking in $33.1 million to retain the No. 1 slot over the busy Thanksgiving weekend.

"The Incredibles" remained in second place with $24.1 million, while "Christmas With the Kranks" debuted with $22.7 million, according to studio estimates. Oliver Stone's historical epic "Alexander," had a so-so debut of $13.4 million, coming in sixth behind "The Polar Express" (No. 4 with $20.1 million) and "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" (No. 5 with $17.8 million).

FINAL WORD

Sen.-elect Barack Obama, D-Ill.| on "The Late Show With David Letterman" on Friday when Letterman commented on Obama growing up in Hawai'i:

"I was in Hawai'i, and so I think the main reason my wife married (me) ... You know, she's from Chicago. She's thinking, 'I've been looking for warm weather for a while.' "
