Adult ticket discounts for state football available

Advertiser Staff

Adult tickets for Friday's First Hawaiian Bank State Football Championships final will cost $12, up $3 from last week's semifinals.

However, $3 discount vouchers for the adult tickets are available at First Hawaiian Bank branches. The discount does not apply to the $5 tickets for seniors (ages 62 and older) and students in grades kindergarten through 12.

The 5 p.m. opener will feature O'ahu Interscholastic Association Division II champion Campbell against Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II champion Iolani. Both drew first-round byes, but won their semifinals over the weekend. The Sabers fended off Kaua'i, 29-20, Friday at Moanalua, while Iolani rallied past Hawai'i Prep Academy, 17-7, Saturday at Kunuiakea Athletic Stadium.

The Division I championship to follow will have ILH Division I champion Kamehameha against Leilehua, which finished third in the OIA tournament. The Warriors had a first-round bye, then beat Lahainaluna, 21-6, in Friday's semifinal at Aloha Stadium. The Mules upset defending state champion Kahuku, 17-14, in the other semifinal.

In 1974, Kamehameha beat Leilehua, 20-19, in the O'ahu Prep Bowl, the mythical state playoff at the time. The schools have met only two times since then, both in nonleague games. The Warriors won those two meetings, 19-13 in 1977 and 21-6 in 1981.

Kamehameha last won the Prep Bowl in 1976, beating Radford, 46-6.

The Mules won the 1984 Prep Bowl by beating Saint Louis, 10-0.

In the Division II tournament, this will be Campbell's furthest advancement in its football history, which started in 1963.

Iolani made it to the 1980 Prep Bowl and played in the only tie in history, 7-7, against Wai'anae.

Iolani and Campbell have played each other only once. The Raiders prevailed, 13-6, in a 1973 nonleague game.
