HHSAA, Nissan to continue Hall

Advertiser Staff

The Hawai'i High School Athletic Association and Nissan North America yesterday announced the 23rd annual Nissan Hall of Honor Athletic Scholarship Program.

The Hall of Honor, which recognizes excellence in athletics and perpetuates the accomplishments of Hawai'i's high school seniors, was established by Nissan in 1982.

"All of us at Nissan are very proud of the Hall of Honor program," said Tom Lynch, regional vice president for Nissan's Northwest region. "For many years, Nissan has been committed to Hawai'i and its communities, and this program continues our resolve to encourage, support and recognize Hawai'i's outstanding youth."

Keith Amemiya, HHSAA executive director, said the program "annually selects 12 outstanding student-athletes for induction into the Hall of Honor. Athletes in the State of Hawai'i who are participating in any sport recognized by the HHSAA, and who are completing their senior year of high school, are eligible for consideration."

While selection is based primarily on athletic achievement, other qualities considered include leadership, versatility, sportsmanship, dedication, behavior on and off the field, academic achievement, and involvement in school and community activities.

An independent 16-member selection committee primarily involved with sports through education or the media, culminates the selection process during a two-day session in May. Typically, the accomplishments of approximately 100 nominated athletes are evaluated.

In the past 22 years, 264 student-athletes from 46 different high schools statewide have received scholarship awards and been inducted into the Hall of Honor during ceremonies at a dinner banquet.

The scholarship awards are part of a larger $30,000 donation Nissan made to the HHSAA earlier this year.
