Olympic long jump champ at Clay clinic

Dwight Phillips, who won the long jump at the Athens Olympics, has been added to the Bryan Clay Clinic set for Dec. 11 at Kaiser High School.

The clinic is free and open to the public. It will be held from 9 to 11 a.m.

Phillips won gold with a leap of 28 feet, 2.25 inches.

Clay, a Castle alum, is Hawai'i's first medalist in track and field, winning the silver in the decathlon in Athens.

Also demonstrating their skills at the clinic will be 2000 and 2004 Olympic shot put silver medalist Adam Nelson, U.S. champion high jumper Jamie Nieto, American 100-meter hurdles star Danielle Carruthers, and three Irish national record-holders: 400-meter hurdler Karen Shinkins, 110-meter high hurdler Peter Coghlan and long jumper Ciaran McDonagh.

Clay and the other athletes will sign autographs during the last part of the clinic.

The first 700 youngsters to arrive at the clinic will receive free Honolulu Marathon Bryan Clay Clinic T-shirts.

Clay, Phillips, Nelson and Nieto will also make appearances at the Honolulu Marathon Living Aloha Expo at the Hawai'i Convention Center Dec. 8 to 10, signing autographs from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Professionals lead amateurs in Cup play

The teams of Kevin Carll and Kirk Nelson and Andrew Feldmann and Ron Castillo Jr. each won two matches yesterday as the professionals took an 8-4 lead over the amateurs in the 32nd annual Governor John A. Burns Challenge Cup at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Carll and Nelson beat Brandan Kop and Clayton Gomi, 1-up, in 4-ball match play and also defeated Kop and Gomi, 1-up, in 4-some match play.

Feldmann and Castillo Jr. swept Mike Kim and Nick Mason by 2-1 scores in both the 4-ball and 4-some formats.

The Cup, which features 12 professionals and amateurs who were the year's top point winners in designated events, winds up today with singles matches starting at 7:16 a.m.
