A short, pricey Parade of Homes

If you plan to tour this year's Parade of Homes that starts tomorrow, be prepared to learn about the latest in design and technology at the new-home showcase, but don't be surprised to see examples mostly out of the average resident's price range.
Of the 11 homes entered in this year's event, just two are priced under $400,000. Five entries are above $600,000, and one is in a stratosphere of its own at more than $3 million.
As part of Hawai'i's steaming housing market where resale property values have soared this year, prices for new-homes are way up and are reflected in this year's Parade, an annual event sponsored by the Building Industry Association of Hawaii.
Last year, four of the nine entries were priced under $400,000, and just one was above $600,000.
Similar to last year though, the number of entries is low. The nine entries in 2003 was the lowest turnout in 40 or so years for the showcase that in previous recent years displayed roughly 20 to 40 homes.
Builders have said they have been too busy trying to satisfy demand, with a few of the state's largest builders entering just one home in the industry event.
Haseko Homes and the Schuler Division of D.R. Horton each entered three homes. Gentry Homes, Stanford Carr Development and Castle & Cooke Homes entered one home each. The other participants are Dowling Co. Inc. and Koko Villas LLC.
This year's theme is "Get House Smart." Featured homes will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday, and Oct. 9 and 10.
