BYUH tennis earns seven wins in Regionals

Brigham Young University Hawai'i's Adrienn Hegedus and Jing Jing Liu each won their opening singles matches at the Wilson/ITA West Regionals yesterday and then teamed for a win in the opening round of the doubles competition at San Diego.

The Seasiders advanced to today's winner's bracket play.

Top-seed Hegedus defeated Sonoma State's Gina Dunch, 6-0, 6-1, while No. 2 seed Liu defeated Sonoma State's Erin Kramer, 6-0, 6-0.

The top-seeded Seasider pair then teamed to defeat UC San Diego's Leigh Roberts and Marissa Hilker, 8-2.

In men's play, top-seed Dillon Porter of BYUH defeated UC San Diego's Seth Spector, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Porter later beat Cal Poly-Pomona's Seth Lewkow, 6-1, 6-1.

Second-seeded Dorian Porada of BYUH defeated Cal Poly-Pomona's Tony Delhierro, 6-1, 6-0, and then beat Sonoma State's Thomas Morton, 6-4, 6-0.

UC San Diego's Spector and John Caldwell upset No. 1 seed Porter and Porada, 9-8(5) in doubles. The men's singles semifinals and finals will be played today.



Golf

City Bank tournament deadline next Friday

The entry deadline for the 27th Annual City Bank Helps O'ahu Golf Tournament has been extended to next Friday, Oct. 8.

The proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce.

"We are extremely proud to give back to the O'ahu community by sponsoring this tournament year after year," said Tournament Director, Wayne Miyao.

A donation of $125 per player or $375 per 3-person team will be collected.

The tournament is scheduled for Oct. 21 at the Pearl Country Club.

Hula bowl

Selection committee announced for 2005

The American Football Coaches Association announced its player selection committee for the 2005 Hula Bowl yesterday.

Former Texas Christian University and Tulsa head coach FA Dry is the chair and is joined by Spike Dykes, George Perles, Hayden Fry and former Brigham Young University head coach LaVell Edwards.

The AFCA will announce five of the eight coaches for the game next week.

The three remaining spots will be filled by the AFCA's Division IAA, Division II and Division III national coach of the year winners.

The 59th Hula Bowl will be played on Jan. 22 at War Memorial Stadium on Maui.
