Advertiser staff

The 90th birthday of Lex Brodie — local tire magnate and TV icon, "Thank you ... very much" — will be honored in a live broadcast from 8 to 11 a.m. on today's Perry & Price Show on KSSK.

Lex Brodie
Brodie, who was born in Kekaha, Kaua'i on Oct. 15, 1914, started out in the mid-1930s giving Waikiki tourists outrigger canoe rides with Duke Kahanamoku's brother, Sam. In 1958 he opened the Windward City Shopping Center Chevron Station, selling tires at cost ($6.95) to customers who handed over their old tires to be recapped.

Later, he changed the company name and moved the business to Queen Street. He also added the now famous "Little Joe" caveman logo and his "Thank you very much" slogan, which he faithfully stated at the end of more than 1,100 TV commercials.

Among those joining the celebration at John Dominis restaurant will be Gov. Linda Lingle, who will commend Brodie for the "Thank You ... Very Much" awards program encouraging kids to write thank-you notes.

The first such award will be presented by state Department of Education Superintendent Pat Hamamoto to Brodie.

Mayor Jeremy Harris will read a proclamation making today Lex Brodie Day.
