Seasiders claim West tennis titles

Second seeds Jing Jing Liu and Dorian Porada defeated their top-seeded Brigham Young-Hawai'i teammates yesterday to capture the singles titles of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Division II West Regionals at La Jolla, Calif.

Liu defeated Adrienn Hegedus, 7-6, 6-3, to win the women's championship, and Porada toppled Dillon Porter, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-1, in the men's final.

Liu had a busy day as she beat Grand Canyon's Medini Sharma, 6-1, 6-2, in an earlier semifinal. Hegedus ousted Cal State-Bakersfield's Katalin Nagy, 6-1, 6-1, in the other semifinal.

Liu and Hegedus also teamed to win the doubles championship with an 8-1 victory over Cal Poly-Pomona's Dehlia Feliz and Katrina Holmberg.

Liu, Hegedus and Porada will represent the Seasiders at the 2004 ITA National Small College Championships, which will be hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University, Oct. 14 to 17, in Fort Myers, Fla.



SURFING

Abubo ousts six-time world champion

Hawai'i's Megan Abubo eliminated Australia's six-time world champion Layne Beachley in the third round of the inaugural Rip Curl Pro WCT yesterday at California's legendary Malibu Beach.

Abubo, who is seeded 15th, scored 11.75 points in inconsistent 2-foot surf. Beachley, currently ranked No. 4 in the world, managed just 11.00 points.

Abubo will face fellow Hawai'i surfer Keala Kennelly in the quarterfinals. Kennelly ousted Australia's Melanie Redman-Carr, 13.50-7.60.

Kaua'i's Rochelle Ballard had the second-highest score of the day — amassing 14.25 points to trounce Australia's Pru Jeffries (4.95). Ballard will meet Australia's Laurina McGrath in the quarterfinals.

Melanie Bartels, the fourth Hawai'i surfer to reach the third round, had the misfortune of facing the hottest surfer of the day. Australia's Chelsea Georgeson scored 16.25 points to oust Bartels, who scored 13.00.

Irons brothers, Garcia advance in France

Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Sunny Garcia advanced to the fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro France.

The third round was completed yesterday in 4- to 5-foot waves at Hossegor, France.

Andy Irons, the two-time defending world champion, posted a two-wave score of 15.83 to eliminate wildcard entry Jonathan Gonzalez of the Canary Islands.

Bruce Irons, Andy's younger brother, defeated Australian Luke Egan. It is the first time this year that Bruce has advanced past the third round.

Garcia, the 2000 world champion, defeated Australian Tom Whitaker.

The contest is the eighth of 11 stops on the 2004 World Championship Tour.



VOLLEYBALL

BYU-Hawai'i wins; Hawai'i-Hilo loses

Noelle Filimoeatu had a match-high 16 kills as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Western New Mexico, 30-28, 30-14, 31-29, to win its first Pacific West Conference match last night in La'ie.

The Seasiders are 7-6 overall and 1-4 in the PacWest. The Mustangs fell to 14-7 and 2-3.

BYUH's Lilly Tufuga added 14 kills and Yu Chuan Weng 12. St. Francis alum Liz Narkon led Western New Mexico with 15 kills.

Also last night, Jessica Bratton had 19 kills and Olivia Munro 18 as Montana State-Billings beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-25, 25-30, 30-14, 30-19, in a PacWest match at the UHH Gymnasium.

Andrea Donahue added 10 kills for MSUB (8-5, 2-3).

Christina Cooley had 14 kills and Maite Ardies 12 to lead UHH (4-10, 1-4).



GOLF

Warriors finish 16th in New Mexico

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot a final-round 302 to finish 16th in the 19-team William H. Tucker Invitational at Albuquerque, N.M.

The Warriors finished with a 903 total. Arizona won with 855.

UNLV's Ryan Moore shot a final-round 7-under 65 to win the individual title with 205. Pierre-Henri Soero led UH with 74—226 to finish in a tie for 62nd.
