Fumes prompt evacuations

Nearly 20 people were evacuated from 10 homes on Kawaihemo Place in Hau'ula about 9:45 a.m. today after neighbors complained about a strong ammonia smell coming from one of the homes.

Firefighters from Hau'ula responded to the call and evacuated homes within 200 yards of the home at 54-265 Kawaihemo Place as a precaution.

A hazardous materials team arrived at about 10 a.m. and was preparing to enter the building, said Capt. Emmit Kane, a Fire Department spokesman.

City paramedics were called and treated two people who were having difficulty breathing, one of them a girl who has asthma, Kane said.

A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft after an incident early yesterday morning in which a 30-year-old man reported a necklace was torn from around his neck.

The man who lost the necklace told police he was fighting with another man at about 2:30 a.m. on Kuhio Avenue near Walina Street in Waikiki when a second man approached, ripped the necklace loose and ran away.

Police officers who were nearby caught the suspect and arrested him.

At 3:30 yesterday morning, police arrested a 37-year-old man at Kuhio and Kaiulani avenues in Waikiki on suspicion of two weapons violations.

A witness told a police sergeant that a man had a gun. The officer found a man matching the description standing in the middle of the street, challenging cars.

Police approached the man, removed him from the street and arrested him on suspicion of failure to properly store a firearm and possession of an unregistered firearm.

A 17-year-old girl who was reported missing Saturday after failing to show up for work at Kukui Plaza was found in Waikiki about 10 p.m. the same day.

Police said Pansy Li, who was last seen at 7:45 a.m. on Nu'uanu Avenue, was unharmed when she was found 14 hours later.
