Two events on business speaking abilities are scheduled:

• The Aloha Society of Association Executives will host a seminar, "HOW TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY WITH MEMBERS," 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Pacific Beach Hotel. Howard Dicus, Web and broadcast editor for Pacific Business News, will provide tips. • How to "work" the convention market is one of the topics of a discussion tomorrow before the Speakers Association of Hawai'i, composed of professional speakers, workshop leaders and trainers. Guest speaker will be Annabel Chotzen, Hawai'i Pacific University professor of public speaking, and longtime local and Mainland motivational speaker. • Federal policies and legislation that affect Native Hawaiians will be explored at a series of educational workshops, sponsored by the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands. The free workshops, GOVERNMENT 101: NATIONAL POLICIES FOR HAWAIIAN NEEDS, conducted by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, are from 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 11 at Kapolei High School; Oct. 12 at Washington Intermediate School; and Oct. 14 at Blanche Pope Elementary School. • MICRO ENTERPRISE TRAINING CLASSES, sponsored by the Honolulu Community Action Program will be offered 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow through Thursday; 6 to 9 p.m., Oct. 12 to 14; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 22 and 23. Topics include how to start a business in Hawai'i, business loans, taxes, marketing, basic computer training, understanding your credit, basic Internet training and money matters. • The Hawaii Women's Business Center and the U.S. Small Business Administration will pair up to present a workshop on selling goods and services to the state. • Robert Hughes, former president of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association, will speak on "SUGAR DAYS: TREASURES FROM THE HAWAIIAN SUGAR PLANTERS' ASSOCIATION PLANTATION ARCHIVES," 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa campus, Hamilton Library.
