ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
'Shark Tale' earns $49 million

Advertiser Staff and News Services

"Shark Tale" — the story about a little fish, voiced by Will Smith, who lies about offing a shark — didn't need to exaggerate its earnings, which are estimated at $49.1 million, the biggest October opening ever, reports Zap2it.com.

"Shark Tale" reeled in an average of $12,000 for each of its 4,016 screens, according to Exhibitor Relations Inc. Although "Ladder 49," the other major studio film opening over the weekend, didn't earn half as much, it still had money to burn, taking in a surprising $22.8 million.

Last week's No. 1 film "The Forgotten," slipped 42.9 percent to third place with $12 million.

Wang-designed Halekulani suite

Vera Wang

The Halekulani hotel's latest luxury upgrade is the 2,135-square-foot Vera Wang Suite, opening Dec. 1. It's decorated with touches chosen by the world-renowned designer: sleek wood and stone furnishings and items from her new home, gift, bath and accessories collection.

Wang, pictured, collaborated with the Halekulani's florist to create signature arrangements, as well. The suite offers a view of Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach, and comes with amenities such as assigned pool cabana and chauffeur. The tab? Only four grand a night.

FINAL WORD

Singer Elton John | ripping Madonna during his acceptance speech at an awards show in London yesterday, after learning she was nominated for best live act:

"Anyone who lip-synchs in public, on stage, when you pay 75 pounds to see them, should be shot."
