Man set aflame in confrontation

A 37-year-old Punchbowl man suffered burns to his neck and back after another man squirted him with a flammable liquid and set him on fire yesterday.

Police said the man was not seriously injured in the 10:30 a.m. incident. A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder and was being held last night pending charges.

Police said a man approached the victim as he was sitting in his car at his home on Bush Lane and smashed a window. The man then splashed the man in the car with an accelerant and ignited him, police said.

The man jumped out of his car and ran away, but police said the assailant gave chase. Police later caught up with the suspect and arrested him without incident.

Police did not say what led to the confrontation between the two, who police said are neighbors.

MAUI

Nene, 4 goslings in release pens

MAKAWAO, Maui — An adult nene and four goslings recently were placed in release pens at Pi'iholo Ranch under a Safe Harbor Agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The agreements encourage voluntary management of endangered species on private lands, while providing assurances to landowners that no additional future regulatory restrictions will be imposed. In this case, ranch owner Peter Baldwin made a 10-year commitment to maintain or improve a nene habitat on his property, establish and maintain a nene release pen, control predators around the release pen, and plant native plants known to be food sources for the bird.

The geese were raised at the Maui Bird Conservation Center. Biologists hope the arrangement with Pi'iholo Ranch will result in the eventual establishment of a population of 75 nene.
