A glimmer of hope for India-Pakistan
You may not have noticed it, but an important step back from the brink of nuclear disaster occurred last week during U.N. meetings in New York. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf had a meeting that was notable for its cordiality.
Granted, these cordialities do not resolve deep rifts between the two countries over Kashmir and other matters. But diplomacy works best when there is a level of trust and respect.
One interesting historical note that might have helped break the ice: Singh was born in what is now Pakistan while Musharraf was born in India.
