Rainbow defender honored by WAC

University of Hawai'i senior defender Jessica Uecker was named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Rainbow Wahine to two shutout conference wins over the weekend.
Uecker, from Rapid City, S.D., anchored a defense that posted its fifth straight shutout and limited Rice and Tulsa to a combined six shots on goal, while adding an assist against Tulsa.
It is the second career WAC Defensive Player of the Week honor for Uecker, who earned her first as a sophomore.
Junior forward Natasha Kai was a nominee for Offensive Player of the Week, after scoring one goal and adding two assists.
The Rainbow Wahine (9-2-2) hit the road for WAC games against Southern Methodist and UTEP this weekend.
HPU's Karleusa wins PacWest honor
Hawai'i Pacific women's volleyball player Nadica Karleusa earned her second consecutive Pacific West Conference Player of the Week honor after leading the Sea Warriors to a pair of conference victories last week.
The 6-foot-2 junior outside hitter/middle blocker tallied 29 total kills in three-game victories against Montana State-Billings and Western New Mexico. She combined to hit .343, and recorded six block assists and one solo block for the No. 8 Sea Warriors (11-1 overall, 5-0 PacWest).
Karleusa, who is from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, ranks in the conference's top 10 in hitting percentage (.265, ninth), kills per game (3.58, ninth) and blocks per game (0.90, fifth).
Rainbow women 15th in New Mexico
The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine golf team is in 15th place after the second day of the Price's Give Em Five Intercollegiate at Las Cruces, N.M., yesterday.
The Rainbow Wahine shot a 308 on Sunday and a 330 yesterday on the New Mexico State Golf Course.
Hawai'i's Dale Gammie is tied for fourth with a 2-over-par 146. Teammate Kari Sur is tied for 69th with a 161, while Megan Stoddart is 80th and Xyra Suyetsugu 87th.
Sara Odelius shot a first-round 77, but was forced to withdraw from the second round.
Texas Tech leads the tournament with a 592 overall score.
HPU's Amodo honored by magazine
Hawai'i Pacific University senior Lori-Ann Amodo has been named American Cheerleader Magazine's "Cheerleader of the Month."
Amodo, a Moanalua High graduate, is a stunter and team captain on the two-time national champion coed cheer squad.
"She is a hard worker, and she doesn't let anything get in her way," said HPU head cheer coach Matt Parkey. "She has a lot of heart and dedication."
As an honoree, Amodo will receive a $1,000 scholarship from Bonne Belle and Soffe sportswear.
In April, Hawai'i Pacific University won its division at the National Cheerleaders Association Chick-fil-A Collegiate Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla.
