Benihana cuisine to celebrate 40th

Restaurateur Rocky Aoki brought flashy Japanese griddle cuisine to America.

Benihana of Tokyo, the restaurant that popularized — and dramatized — the Japanese teppanyaki technique for an American audience, this week celebrates the 66th birthday of colorful founder Rocky Aoki and the 40th anniversary of the international chain.

Aoki will be here for a dinner 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Benihana in the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Tickets are $40, including five courses and tea; 955-5955.


Food, new products take center stage

The 40th annual Food and New Products Show is set for Oct. 14 through 17 at Blaisdell Center Arena and Exhibition Hall. Food products, samples, cooking demonstrations and tasting will be concentrated in the arena.

Admission: $5 adults; $4 seniors, military children 7 to 12 with paying adult; younger than 7 free with paying adult. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Information: 945-3594, www.pacificexpos.com.


Auntie Pasto's puts on a mushroom extravaganza

The annual festival of fungi, Mushroom Mania, is on at Auntie Pasto's through Oct. 31. Mushroom specials are featured daily, along with standards such as a mushroom sauté, roasted mushroom salad, a pizza featuring a half-pound of assorted Hamakua mushrooms and portobello Parmesan over pasta.
