Man charged in attack on wife

A 33-year-old Nanakuli man was charged yesterday with second-degree attempted murder in connection with a knife attack on his wife Monday.

John K. Nihipali Sr. also was charged with one count of second-degree assault after police said he attacked a man who came to the aid of his wife. Bail was set at $100,000.

Police said Nihipali went to the Paradise Chapel in Ma'ili where his estranged wife is employed on Monday mornings. After giving her a hug, police said, Nihipali went to the restroom. He returned with a knife and attacked his wife.

The church's pastor ran to help her, but police said Nihipali lunged at the pastor and cut him on the hand.

The woman and the pastor were treated for their injuries and released.
