WINDWARD

Quarry Road cleanup goes on

Cleanup of Kapa'a Quarry Road continues as construction firms, the city, state and a local group pull tons of derelict cars from the hillsides and abandoned buildings around the marsh.

Workers are removing an estimated 80,000 pounds of debris from the roadsides, said Shannon Wood of the Windward Ahupua'a Alliance, which is spearheading the effort.

Automobiles were removed last week, and construction debris will be removed soon, said the group's Jim Wood.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources plans to hire trucks to remove some 40 loads of wood, metal and concrete. The city has agreed to waive the tipping fee, Wood said.

Once the removal is complete, Ameron Hawai'i will place boulders in strategic locations to prevent people from dumping off-road, he said.

The cleanup is a joint effort of Goodfellow Bros. Inc., Frank Coluccio Construction Co., the Windward Ahupua'a Alliance, state Department of Land and Natural Resources and city Facilities Maintenance and Environmental Services departments.
