Waves' Kyono earns golf honor

 •  Surf's up on the Eastern shore

Pepperdine senior Rachel Kyono was named the West Coast Conference Women's Golfer of the Month for September, after leading the Waves to a third-place finish at the Branch Law/Dick McGuire Invitational.

Kyono, a 2001 graduate of Kaua'i from Lawa'i, shot rounds of 73-72-71 for a 3-under-par score of 216 to tie for fourth.

Kyono has a 72.00 stroke average after her opening tournament.



Men's Soccer

Santa Clara sophomore forward Keith DeVey (St. Anthony '02 of Kula, Maui) scored a goal to lead the fourth-ranked Broncos past San Francisco, 1-0, Friday in their West Coast Conference opener.

DeVey, who entered the game only 32 seconds prior to scoring, tallied his third goal of the season in the 53rd minute from the right side of the penalty box into the far side of the goal.



Air Riflery

Nevada senior Ryan Tanoue (Saint Louis '01 of Honolulu), a five-time All-American, shot 393 to lead Nevada to a victory over San Francisco this past weekend.

His younger brother, sophomore Michael (Saint Louis), shot 389, and Eric Okamoto (Saint Louis) 373.



Women's Soccer

Portland State sophomore midfielder Kari Otani (Maui '03 of Kahului) was named the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Vikings to a 1-0-1 record over the weekend, with a win over Oregon State and a tie against Wyoming.

Otani scored her first career goal in the tie with Wyoming.



Women's Tennis

Santa Clara senior Janalle Kaloi (Kamehameha '01 of Wahiawa) advanced to the third round of the 2004 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Pre-Qualifying Championships.

Kaloi defeated Maria Husain of Penn State, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, in the second round early Sunday morning, but was ousted in an afternoon match by Caitlin Burke of Wisconsin, 6-0, 6-1.

Younger sister Kimi (Kamehameha '03 of Wahiawa), a sophomore at Loyola Marymount, lost to Rice senior Tracie Chong (Iolani '01 of Hawai'i Kai), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round Saturday.

Chong lost to Duke's Saras Arasu, 6-1, 6-2, Sunday afternoon.



Men's Golf

Air Force senior Kala'e Leong (Kamehameha of Honolulu) earned All-Service Academy honors after finishing in a tie for third place at the Service Academy Golf Classic Sept. 27.

Leong, who was named to the Commandant's list for academic, military and athletic excellence, shot 73-74-74—221 in the tournament that included golfers from the Army, Navy and Merchant Marines.



Women's Cross Country

Willamette sophomore Carly Killam (Punahou '03 of Kailua) finished 88th in the 5K women's college division at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore., Saturday.

Killam was timed in 19 minutes, 28.77 seconds.

Eastern Oregon sophomore Nicole Woitovitch (Kalani '03 of Kailua) placed 131st (20:09.35), Pacific (Ore.) freshman Caitlyn Tateishi (Waiakea of Pahoa) finished 167th (20:44.69) and Willamette sophomore Rachel White (Punahou of Mililani) came in 182nd (21:00.66).
