Irons, Robb win first-round heats

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Kalani Robb won their first-round heats in the Billabong Pro yesterday in 3- to 4-foot waves at Mundaka, Spain.

Irons, the two-time defending world champ, recorded the top scores of the day. He received a near-perfect 9.5 on his first wave, then followed it with an 8.0.

Irons won the Quiksilver Pro France on Sunday, then said he suffered through a case of food poisoning Monday.

"I actually didn't know how my body was going to react," he said. "I still felt pretty achy, so I'm glad I can relax for at least a day while I get it out of my system."

As first-round winners, Irons and Robb get byes in the second round.

Two other Hawai'i surfers, Bruce Irons and Sunny Garcia, have yet to surf in the first round.
