Let youngsters help in kitchen

When children ask to help in the kitchen, let them.

Deborah Shelton, author of "The Five Minute Parent" (Bayou Publishing, $12.95), suggests planning one easy dish that your child can make on his or her own. Lay out all of the ingredients, chopped and peeled if necessary, along with the appropriate bowls and utensils. Here are a few dishes to try, along with a list of what you'll need:

  • Guacamole: mashed avocados, chopped tomatoes, chopped onions, oregano, salt, bowl, spoon.
  • Fruit salad: sliced apples, pineapple, pears, other favorite fruits, bowl, spoon.
  • Instant pudding: package of instant pudding, milk, bowl, spoon.

FINAL WORD

Nani Cockett | Former University of Hawai'i basketball star, on her dual duties as an extra (Officer I. Garcia) and production assistant on NBC's "Hawaii."

"If I get yelled at, that's OK. I can take it. I'm used to it. Vince Goo yelled more. So did my coaches in Europe."
