Mayoral candidates threw all their money into Sept. 18 primary

Honolulu's mayoral candidates nearly drained their campaign accounts in the days leading up to the Sept. 18 primary election, and underdog Mufi Hannemann poured a personal loan into his effort for the first time, according to reports filed yesterday with the state Campaign Spending Commission.

Hannemann loaned his campaign committee more than $90,000 shortly before the primary, and the group was more than $57,000 in debt to him on election day, his campaign's report said. The campaign has spent $1.5 million on the race so far.

Duke Bainum's campaign, which has spent a record $3.1 million, had just $241 left on election day. Bainum, who led Hannemann in the primary by nearly 6,000 votes, lent his campaign nearly $2 million earlier and has indicated more loans are likely.

The two candidates, who will face off in the Nov. 2 general election, have spent a combined total of $4,741,087 on the race so far — about $700,000 more than was spent in the 2000 election by Hannemann, Frank Fasi and Mayor Jeremy Harris.

Hannemann has garnered more than $1.4 million in donations, surpassing the more than $1.1 million raised by Bainum. But Bainum's loans have given his campaign a clear cash advantage.

Spokeswoman Elisa Yadao said the Hannemann camp has collected donations since the primary, but that the financial competition has been tough.

"We have been getting contributions, both large and small," she said. "People have been incredibly generous, for which we are very grateful. We're running against someone who's very well-financed, and we've had to work very hard to get our message out."

Spokeswoman Phyllis Kihara said Bainum's campaign has also raised money since the primary.

"There's been a lot of support for this campaign, and I think the momentum is really with this campaign," she said. "We've been very pleased with the momentum leading up to, and since, the primary election. Clearly, it is on our side."

The reports filed yesterday cover the period from Sept. 4 to Sept. 18. Bainum's campaign collected $19,821 in donations during that time, while Hannemann's camp collected $33,155, plus the $90,283 loan from Hannemann.
