The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team will have to wait a little longer for its first win over perennial Western Athletic Conference power Southern Methodist.
The 21st-ranked Mustangs overcame a two-goal performance by Hawai'i's Natasha Kai to rally for a 3-2 victory last night at Westcott Field in Dallas.
Allison Brill's goal with 59 minutes, 6 seconds left in the match capped SMU's rally from a 2-0 halftime deficit. The Mustangs improved to 7-2-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the WAC. They are now 7-0-1 against the Rainbow Wahine.
Hawai'i (9-3-2, 2-1 WAC), which saw its seven-match WAC and six-match road streaks end, plays at Texas-El Paso tomorrow.
Adria Campbell, a 2004 Punahou School graduate, and Kimber Bailey also scored for SMU.
Following a 30-minute daily because of a shortage of officials, Kai wasted little time putting UH on the scoreboard. She stole the ball on the SMU half of the field and rocketed a 25-yard shot into the left corner of the goal after just 16 seconds of play.
Kai scored again in the 19th minute when she took a long ball from Seline Williams, maneuvered around three defenders and bent a left-footed shot into the goal from just inside the top of the box.
The San Jose Earthquakes re-signed forward Brian Ching to a multi-year contract yesterday.
Ching, a 1996 graduate of Kamehameha Schools, is tied for first in Major League Soccer with 11 goals.
"He has been a big part of our success since he has been here," Earthquakes coach Dominic Kinnear said. "We are excited to have a player of his quality signed for the long term."
