Chaminade defeats UH-Hilo in volleyball

Kahala Kabalis had 17 kills and Patti Hardimon 16 as Chaminade outlasted Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-21, 29-31, 30-19, 30-26, last night in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at the UHH Gymnasium.

Valasi Sepulona added 15 kills and Marijana Stanic 12 for the Silverswords, who improved to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the PacWest.

Kalae Araujo added 31 digs and Kabalis 21 for Chaminade.

Christina Cooley had 13 kills and Nanea Kamauoha added 11 kills and 13 digs for Hilo (4-12, 1-5).

Cori Sutter and Rose Ramsey each were in on seven blocks for the Vulcans.

Elsewhere yesterday, Yu Chuan Weng hammered 15 kills as Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept Montana State-Billings, 30-23, 30-21, 30-27, in a non-conference match at Billings, Mont.

Beth Robertson had 10 kills and 12 digs for the Seasiders, who improved to 8-7.

Olivia Munro had 14 kills and 13 digs to lead the Yellowjackets (10-6).



CROSS COUNTRY

UHH's Ortiz, BYUH's Smith win HPU titles

University of Hawai'i-Hilo's Germaine Ortiz won the men's 10k race and Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Chelsea Smith captured the women's 6k race yesterday at the Hawai'i Pacific University Cross Country Meet.

Ortiz finished 50 seconds ahead of the pack in 32 minutes, 34 seconds to lead the Vulcans to the team title. Hawai'i-Hilo scored a low-best 32 points to edge BYUH (38). HPU (74) finished third and Chaminade (88) fourth.

Smith won by nearly two minutes in 21:12, leading the Seasiders to a 50-point win.

BYUH had 24 points, with UH-Manoa and UH-Hilo tying for second with 74 and HPU placing fourth with 89.

Rainbow Wahine finished fourth

Led by freshman Sabrina Reeve, the University of Hawai'i women's team finished fourth out of 11 Division 1 programs yesterday at the 13th UC San Diego Triton Cross Country Classic at La Jolla, Calif.

Reeve ran the 6-kilometer run in 22 minutes, 46.7 seconds to place seventh.

The Rainbow Wahine finished with 108 points. Oklahoma State, led by overall winner Mary Davies (21:21.7), won with 40 points.



GOLF

Pagan tied for 8th at senior golf

Kula's Rose Pagan shot 7-over 79 yesterday and is tied for eighth after the first round of qualifying in the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship. The tournament is being played at Pasatiempo Golf Club, in Santa Cruz, Calif.

San Diego's Marsha Butler leads with a 76.

Bev Kim, a Hawai'i Golf Hall of Fame member from Wahiawa, is tied for 80th after shooting 90. Hawai'i's other qualifiers are Holuloa's Barbara Millslagle (96) and Honolulu's Lily Yao (100), Biac Frame (109) and Suzie Kimi (117).

Defending champion is 70-year-old Marlene Streit of Canada, who will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame next month. Streit shot 86 in her first round, still lower than the average score of 87.5

Today is the final round of stroke play for this 50-and-older championship. The field will be cut to the top 64 for match play, with the final round scheduled for Thursday.

Play was suspended because of darkness in the USGA Senior Amateur Championship yesterday, at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles. Honolulu's Shigeru Matsui, Hawai'i's lone qualifier, was on the course at 8-over-par.

Five golfers were under par when play was stopped. The opening round started two hours late because of fog.



WATER POLO

BYUH finishes 4-0 in California tourney

The 13th-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's water polo team won two matches yesterday to finish unbeaten in the Claremont Convergence tournament at Claremont, Calif.

The Seasiders beat UC Santa Cruz, 8-2, and Chapman, 13-3, to finish 4-0 and run their season record to 9-2.

Vanja Kalabic scored two goals and BYUH limited Santa Cruz to six shots in the first game.
