A Honolulu police officer who was directing traffic on Farrington Highway in Nanakuli because of work on a waterline replacement project was hit by a car about 10 p.m. yesterday and was reported in fair condition this morning at The Queen's Medical Center.

The officer, age 28, who is assigned to the Pearl City police district and whose name has not been released, was listed in serious condition while he was being taken to the hospital.

Police said the officer was on special duty, stopping traffic on Farrington near Mohihi Street on behalf of Delta Construction , when a 1988 Chevrolet Corsica driven by a 45-year-old Wai'anae man failed to stop and hit the officer.

The driver stopped after hitting the officer and was cited for not having a license, insurance, a current safety check or current registration. The driver was also arrested on several outstanding contempt of court warrants, police said.

The accident last night marked the fourth time in the past two months that Honolulu police officers have been involved in traffic mishaps.

Police officer Scott Goeas was injured Friday morning when a suspected drunk driver ran a red light and crashed his late model Toyota truck into Goeas' Dodge Durangoin Mililani. Goeas received neck and leg injuries but was treated and released.

On Sept. 16, police officer Kevin Bailey was critically injured when he swerved his Ford Explorer on Kalaniana'ole Highway in 'Aina Haina while trying to avoid a Honda Civic that turned left in front of him without warning. The Honda driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Bailey, who suffered head and internal injuries, was recently discharged from the hospital and is undergoing rehabilitation.

Wahiawa police officer Issac Veal was killed Aug. 16 when his Dodge Durango flipped over on H-2 Freeway while responding to a report of a gang fight in Mililani.
