UTEP stops Rainbows in soccer

Christina McCartney scored on a pass from Kia Sams in the 80th minute to lead host Texas-El Paso to a 2-1 victory over Hawai'i yesterday in a Western Athletic Conference soccer match.

Hawai'i is 9-4-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the WAC. UTEP is 9-2-1 and 2-0-1.

After a scoreless first half, Sams scored in the 47th minute for UTEP. Hawai'i Robyn deHay scored off an assist from Gabrielle Bohlman to tie it in the 60th minute.

The Rainbow Wahine outshot the Miners, 16-3.

UH lost its second in a row on the road and is 5-2-1 on the road this season.

The Rainbow Wahine play their final regular season home matches against Nevada on Friday and Boise State on Sunday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Hawai'i will host the Western Athletic Conference Championships, Nov. 4 to 6.



GOLF

Maui's Pagan advances to USGA match play

Rose Pagan was the only Hawai'i golfer to advance to match play at the 43rd USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship yesterday at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Pagan, of Kula, Maui, shot a 12-over-par 84, finished stroke play at 163 and was tied for 13th. Robin Donnelley of Lake Forrest, Ill., was the clubhouse leader after a 73-150.

Play was suspended because of darkness. Half of the field of 132 golfers will complete their rounds today before the start of match play.

The top 64 players advanced to match play. The projected cut was 173.

Other Hawai'i golfers included Beverly Kim, of Honolulu, 87-177; Barbara Millslagle of Holuloa, 91-187; Lily Yao of Honolulu, 106-206; Biac Frame of Honolulu, 102-211; Suzie Kimi, Honolulu, 100-217.

At the 50th USGA Senior Amateur Championship, Hawai'i's lone entry, Shigeru Matsui, of Honolulu, shot a 14-over 84 to finish at 168 and failed to advance to match play at the Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles.

Play also was suspended because of darkness and would be concluded today.

Ronald Vannelli of Edison, N.J., was the clubhouse leader at 71-144.

The top 64 advance to match play.
