Narkon lifts W. New Mexico past BYUH

Liz Narkon, a St. Francis School alum, had 15 kills to lead Western New Mexico to a 30-23, 30-28, 30-26 Pacific West Conference volleyball victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i last night at Silver City, N.M.

Western New Mexico is 15-7 overall and 3-3 in the PacWest. BYUH is 7-7 and 1-5.

Narkon, a 6-1 sophomore outside hitter, also added three aces for the Mustangs.

Jennifer Snowbarger and Suzaanne Bruchhauser added 11 kills each for Western New Mexico.

Noelle Filimoeatu had a match-high 16 kills for BYUH. Lilly Tufuga added 12 kills.



GOLF

Top-ranked UH-Hilo leads Chico tourney

The top-ranked University of Hawai'i-Hilo golf team shot 3-under-par 573 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead at the Chico State/Wells Fargo Men's Invitational at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico, Calif.

St. Martin's (Lacey, Wash.) College's Shane Prante (68-67) leads the tournament at 9-under 135. The first two rounds were played yesterday; the final round is today.

UH-Hilo, ranked No. 1 in the Golfstat/NCAA Division II poll, leads Cal State Bakersfield (575), St. Martin's (577), and Cal State Stanislaus (586). The team scores of each round are based on the best 4 of 5 scores.

UH-Hilo's Kevin Shimomura and Tysen Shinaut each shot rounds of 74-69 to tie for fifth at 143. Nick Mason shot 71-74 for 145 and a tie for ninth. Colin Gilliam (72-74) and Garrett Okamura (70-76) are at 146.

Pagan loses USGA match play opener

Martha McAlister of Maumelle, Ark., defeated Rose Pagan of Kula, Maui, 2 and 1, in the opening round of match play at the 43rd USGA Senior Women's Amateur yesterday at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Pagan, who finished tied for 12th in stroke play, tied the match with a par 3 on the 15th hole, but double-bogeys on the 16th and 17th gave McAlister the match.

Pagan was the only Hawai'i player to reach match play. Five others were eliminated Sunday.



SOCCER

SMU's Campbell honored by WAC

Southern Methodist sophomore forward Adria Campbell, a 2003 Punahou graduate, was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring four goals over the weekend.

Campbell, from Kailua, posted her first career hat trick in SMU's 6-1 win over Houston and scored the tying goal in the Mustangs' 3-2 win over Hawai'i, helping SMU tie for first place in the WAC with a 2-0-1 record. Her seven goals on the season are already two more than she had in 2003.



TENNIS

Ex-touring pro will keynote convention

Former ATP touring pro Eliot Teltscher will be the keynote speaker at the annual U.S. Professional Tennis Association Hawai'i Division Convention, next Monday and Tuesday at Waialae Country Club.

Teltscher is the USTA's Director of Tennis Operations for USA Tennis High Performance.

Other speakers include University of Hawai'i women's volleyball coach Dave Shoji, BYU-Hawai'i tennis coach David T. Porter and UH men's tennis coach John Nelson.
