Authorities find youth escapee

An 18-year-old ward at the Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility was arrested yesterday after he escaped from the Windward facility and allegedly tried to steal a car, police said.

The ward, who is serving out a felony conviction at HYCF until his 19th birthday, was allowed to leave the facility on a three-hour furlough Monday, but did not return, police said. At 1 a.m. yesterday, police responded to a car theft call in downtown Honolulu and arrested the youth.



Shark victim still in fair condition

A 34-year-old Kane'ohe man who was bitten by a shark Saturday off Moloka'i remained at The Queen's Medical Center yesterday in fair condition, the hospital said.

Davy Sanada was bitten by a shark on the left shoulder area as he was spear fishing near Kupeke Fishpond.

Sanada underwent surgery at Maui Memorial Medical Center and was transferred to Queen's on Monday.

His primary physician is monitoring the wound to see if additional surgery will be needed to clean the wound, or if Sanada will require plastic surgery, the hospital said in a news release.



2 Kaua'i girls remain missing

Kaua'i police are looking for two teenage girls, in separate cases, who have been missing for almost three weeks.

Kapela Keaweamahi, 15, was last seen on Sept. 29, police said. She is 5 feet 8 and 120 pounds, with brown hair, brown eyes and a fair complexion. Police said she may be in the Hanama'ulu area.

Velvet Puulei, 16, was last seen on Sept. 24, police said. Puulei, who may be in the Kapa'a area, is described as 5 feet 6 and about 165 pounds. She has brown hair, brown eyes and a tan complexion.

Kaua'i police are asking for the community's help in finding the missing teens. Anyone with information is asked to contact Claire Ueno at (808) 241-1696 or KPD Dispatch at (808) 241-1711.



Man faces drug, car theft charges

A 34-year-old man arrested on suspicion of car theft in Kane'ohe Monday faces drug charges as well.

Police said a patrol officer spotted the car, which matched an all points bulletin that had been broadcast earlier.

A check of the car's license plate showed it had been reported stolen, police said.

The patrol officer ordered the man to pull over but he tried to speed away, crashed the car and then got out and ran.

He was found nearby and arrested on suspicion of car theft as well as promotion of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia after officers reported finding drugs and equipment while taking the man into custody.



Man allegedly stole motorcycle

A 24-year-old man was arrested in 'Aiea Monday afternoon on suspicion of stealing a motorcycle after a friend of the motorcycle's owner saw it being driven by someone else.

The friend called police about 4:30 p.m. and officers ordered the motorcycle operator to pull over. Instead, the motorcycle rider tried to evade police but crashed while trying to speed away.



Man arrested in bus-stop assault

A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault after an altercation early yesterday at a Kailua bus stop.

Police said a 45-year-old man had been drinking with acquaintances near the bus stop when one of them hit him on the head with a bottle.

The injured man was taken to Castle Medical Center to be treated for his injuries but apparently walked away unnoticed, police said.
