BYUH volleyball falls in five

Liz Narkon, a St. Francis School graduate, hammered a match-high 21 kills as Western New Mexico defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 30-26, 23-30, 30-28, 19-30, 15-12, yesterday in a non-conference women's volleyball match at Silver City, N.M.

Narkon also had 25 digs and Jennifer Snowbarger had 20 kills and 20 digs for the Lady Mustangs (16-7).

Yu Chuan Weng had 18 kills, 16 digs and was in on eight blocks for the Seasiders (7-8), who lost despite dominating their hosts statistically.

Noelle Filimoeatu had 16 kills, Beth Robertson 12 and Lilly Tufuga 11 for BYUH, which outhit Western New Mexico, .166 to .120, and also amassed more kills (69-56), assists (63-54), aces (10-6), blocks (20-9) and points (126-117).



GOLF

UHH men third, UHH women sixth

The top-ranked University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's golf team stumbled to a final-round 301 yesterday to finish third in the 13-team field of the Chico State/Wells Fargo Invitational at Chico, Calif.

The Vulcans finished at 10-over 874. Cal State Bakersfield won with 291—866, a stroke ahead of St. Martin's.

UHH's Nick Mason (72) and Tysen Shinaut (74) tied for seventh at 1-over 217. St. Martin's Shane Prante won with 206.

Meanwhile, the UHH women's team finished sixth at the 10-team Western Washington Invitational at Bellingham, Wash.

The Vulcans shot 988. Western Washington won with 943.

UHH freshman Kiilani Matsuyoshi shot a 1-over 74 yesterday to finish second at 227, seven strokes behind Western Washington's Katja Trygg.



SAILING

Rainbows finish second in California

The No. 14-ranked University of Hawai'i coed sailing team finished second this past weekend in the Stoney Burke Intersectional at Berkeley, Calif.

Hawai'i finished with 96 points. Stanford won the 23-team event with a low-best 92 points.

UH finished fourth in A division with 70 points and led B division — with senior Matthew Stine and sophomore Cassandra Harris scoring 26 points.

The Rainbows will next compete at the National Single-handed Championships, Oct. 22 to 24 in Minnesota.



GOLF

Ex-NBA stars at autograph session

Former NBA stars Moses Malone, JoJo White, Lucius Allen and Ed Ratleff will join members of the 1960s University of Hawai'i "Fab Five" team at Murphy's Bar & Grill tonight for a special autograph session.

The event, which starts at 5:30 p.m., is part of the inaugural Sports Celebrity Golf Classic, which will be held tomorrow at Luana Hills Golf Club. The tournament tees off at 12:20 p.m. with a shotgun start.
