Kop to defend OCC Senior Men's title

Super Senior Wendell Kop will defend his title at the 14th annual Oahu Country Club Senior Men's Invitational, Monday and Tuesday in Nu'uanu.

Kop won the overall championship last year at age 68. His 2-under-par 140 was a shot better than Russ McGarry, who captured the Senior Division. Kop has won either the Senior Division (ages 55 to 64) or Super Seniors (65-older) five times.

A field of 70 players, which includes Mervin Matsumoto, Art Costas, Vince Goo and Tom Goodbody, will tee off from 7 a.m. each day.



LPGA's Rarick to host Waikoloa Challenge

LPGA player Cindy Rarick will return to Hawai'i to host the third annual Waikoloa Women's Golf Challenge, Oct. 22 to 24 on the Big Island. Rarick, who represents Waikoloa, played for the University of Hawai'i.

Proceeds of the Challenge benefit the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Foundation, and its efforts to promote women in golf.

The tournament opens next Saturday at Kings' Course, with the final round Sunday at the Beach Course. Practice rounds are next Friday, with Rarick scheduled to offer a clinic.

Entry fee is $650, for the Friday cocktail reception and draw party, two-day tournament, tee gift package, spa treatment, Saturday evening function, awards luncheon and clinic.

Testing scheduled for junior golfers

Juniors interested in becoming a Players' Tour Member of the Oahu Junior Golf Association must take the Playing Ability Testing (PATS) beginning in January. Competitive juniors ages 7 to 17 are eligible.

11 Hawai'i resorts make Golf Digest 'best' list

Eleven Hawai'i resorts are included in Golf Digest's "75 Best Golf Resorts in North America." The biennial ranking is in the November issue.

The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on the Big Island, ranked seventh, and The Lodge at Ko'ele/Manele Bay on Lana'i, eighth, are in the top 10.

Kapalua (19) was included in the Top 20, followed by Mauna Lani (24), Princeville (29), Mauna Kea Beach (31), Hyatt Regency Kaua'i (32), Grand Wailea (33), Kaua'i Marriott (50), Waikoloa Beach (59), and Maui Prince/Makena (61).

Pebble Beach is the No. 1-ranked resort, with Bandon Dunes (Oregon) coming in second and American Club, the main hotel for the Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run golf courses in Wisconsin, third.

Hawai'i and Florida each have 11 resorts in the ranking — the most of any state. Arizona has 10 entries and California, eight.
