Film festival kicks off Thursday

Advertiser Staff

"Cuba Libre," featuring Gael Garcia Bernal (who also stars in "The Motorcycle Diaries" — reviewed on Page 38), is among the films in the Hawaii International Film Festival, opening Thursday.
The Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival, featuring 168 films from 24 countries, hits the screen Thursday night at the Hawai'i Theatre. The lead-off film, "Clean," stars Maggie Cheung as a woman who tries to shed her drug-filled past to become a good mother.

Opening-night tickets are $15 general, $12 for festival members and sponsors. Cheung is scheduled to appear, too. The screening is at 8 p.m.

The festival continues through Oct. 31 on O'ahu at the Dole theaters, the Hawai'i Theatre, the Doris Duke and the University of Hawai'i-Manoa.

Tickets are $8 general, $7 for military, seniors, students and those 13 and younger. See hiff.org.
