Driver remains in hospital after shooting

By Will Hoover

An 18-year-old man shot in the stomach by Honolulu police after a wild chase in Pearl City remained hospitalized at The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition yesterday.

Police said Thomas Greene, 18, was driving a stolen car when he ran over one officer, injured two others and rammed several vehicles before slamming head-on into a police cruiser. Police fired one shot, hitting Greene, police said.

Police said Greene may not be arrested in connection with the case until he is released from the hospital and is well enough to appear in court. However, they said Greene could be arrested at any point in the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, police continued to monitor Greene's condition.

Greene faces multiple counts on charges of attempted murder, car theft, driving without a license and criminal property damage, police said. Court records show Greene was arrested Sept. 12 on suspicion of car theft.

Randy Garcia, 24, a second person in the car, remained in custody since his arrest Wednesday. Police say he may be charged today on felony theft and promotion of dangerous drugs. Garcia has been on probation for a forgery conviction.

Police said three officers who were injured in the incident were not hospitalized and had suffered no life-threatening injuries.
