Fugitive sex offender considered dangerous

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police are seeking a convicted sex offender and escapee from Washington state who was released on bail last month after his arrest in Ka'u.

Carl William Lindsey

Police said they are "greatly concerned" about finding 26-year-old Carl William Lindsey, who is considered dangerous and should not be approached.

Lindsey has convictions in three states for theft, shoplifting, burglary, felony assault and sexual assault involving a child, police said. He appeared in District Court in Na'alehu on Sept. 8 to face a contempt of court charge in connection with a traffic violation, and police were waiting to arrest him on a warrant from Washington, said detective Lucille Melemai.

Deputy Prosecutor Rick Damerville said Lindsey is wanted in Washington for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender and escaping from custody while on a probation-like status. He reportedly failed to report to the Department of Corrections in Cowlitz County after being released from the Washington Correctional Center on March 31.

After Lindsey was arrested in Na'alehu, the county prosecutor's office argued he should be held without bail until he could be returned to Washington. Instead, Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura set bail at $5,000, and police said a friend posted the amount for Lindsey.

He has not been heard from since, and did not show up for a Oct. 7 court date in Hilo, Damerville said.

Lindsey is Caucasian, 5 feet 11, and weighs about 160 pounds. He has hazel eyes and reddish-brown hair, and wears prescription glasses. He has a tattoo of a small teardrop under his left eye, and numerous tattoos of insects and animals on his chest and forearms, police said.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call Melemai at (808) 961-2377, the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311, Hilo Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300 or Kona Crime Stoppers at (808) 329-8181.
