The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team was picked to finish fourth by the media and fifth by the coaches in the Western Athletic Conference preseason polls released yesterday.

Texas-El Paso was picked first in both polls.

Hawai'i was 21-12 overall last season and finished fifth in the WAC.

UH forward Julian Sensley, the only returning starter from last season, was selected to the Preseason All-WAC first team by the conference coaches. The 6-foot-9 junior averaged 12.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game last season.

UH recruit Matt Gipson was named the Preseason Newcomer of the Year by the media. The 6-9 forward was a third team junior college All-America selection at North Idaho College last season.

Rice senior forward Michael Harris was named Preseason Player of the Year by both the coaches and media.

WAC coaches pick Rainbow Wahine 8th

The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team finished eighth in a preseason poll of the 10 WAC women's coaches.

Louisiana Tech, the three-time defending conference champion, was picked first.

Hawai'i forward Jade Abele was named to the Preseason All-WAC Team. The 6-1 junior led UH in scoring (14.2 ppg), rebounds (6.1 rpg), assists (60) and 3-pointers made (38) last season. The Rainbow Wahine finished 8-20 last season, the final under coach Vince Goo.

Goo retired after 17 seasons with a 334-166 win-loss record. Jim Bolla was hired as the women's coach in July.

There was no media poll for the women's teams.
