In the early hours of this morning, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team got to be different superheroes.

By this afternoon, they have to start becoming Rainbow Warriors.

"I like the energy of this team," senior forward Jeff Blackett said. "The key now is getting everybody to play together. There's a lot of new guys out here, but the potential is there."

The 2004-05 team was introduced in the wee hours of this morning during the annual Midnight Ohana at the Stan Sheriff Center. Today is the first day NCAA basketball teams can begin practicing.

The 'Bows came out of the locker room in superhero costumes. Among the best-dressed: Julian Sensley as The Punisher, Bobby Nash as Indiana Jones, new recruit Matt Gibson as Superman, and Vaidotas Peciukas as Tarzan.

Head coach Riley Wallace was dressed as Darth Vader.

After the introductions, the team played a 20-minute intrasquad scrimmage.

Blackett scored 11 points on 5 of 8 shooting to lead the Green to a 31-28 victory over the White.

The White led by as many as nine points, but Blackett and new recruit Matt Gipson led the comeback. Gipson scored four points in the final minute to erase a 28-27 deficit.

Bobby Nash led the White with 14 points, including 4 of 5 shooting from 3-point range.

Earlier, Nash won the 3-point shootout against Amy Sanders of the UH women's team.

New point guard recruit Deonte Tatum won the slam-dunk contest with a reverse dunk after tapping the ball off the backboard.

The Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine also was introduced in superhero costumes. New head coach Jim Bolla was The Terminator.

The Rainbow Wahine played a 10-minute intrasquad scrimmage that ended in a 17-17 tie. Dalia Solia scored a game-high eight points, including six points in the final minute.

Both UH teams will start "real" practices later today.
