Lau among top women bankers

Constance Lau, president and chief executive of American Savings Bank, has been named one of the 25 most powerful women in banking by US Banker, a leading industry publication.

Lau was 11th in the publication's second annual ranking. An article accompanying the ranking noted that Lau more than doubled commercial loan volume at American Savings to $286 million in just two years.



BancWest gets acquisition OK

The Federal Reserve Board has approved Honolulu-based BancWest Corp.'s acquisition of two Mainland banking companies.

BancWest, parent company of First Hawaiian Bank and Bank of the West, was cleared to acquire Community First Bankshares Inc. and USDB Bancorp. Both transactions are expected to close Oct. 31 Community First is the parent company of Community First National Bank and Community First Insurance Inc. USDB Bancorp is the parent company of Union Safe Deposit Bank.
