Kai lifts Rainbow Wahine in OT, 3-2

University of Hawai'i junior forward Natasha Kai scored 3 minutes, 25 seconds into overtime as the Rainbow Wahine soccer team escaped with a 3-2 win over Nevada in a Western Athletic Conference match last night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium in front of 1,346 fans.

Freshman midfielder Gabrielle Bohlman found Kai open on the left side of the field, and Kai shot a low ball under Nevada goalkeeper Megan Tarpenning for her third overtime goal of the season, in the fifth overtime game the Rainbow Wahine have played in this season.

"We're good in overtime, but I don't want to go to overtime to win a game," said Kai, of Hawai'i's 3-0-2 record in overtime games this season.

"If we lost, we were done for the WAC, and it would have been embarrassing," she added.

Kai scored two goals and freshman forward Koren Takeyama added a goal and helped set up another for the Rainbow Wahine, who improved to 10-4-2 overall and 3-2 in the WAC. Nevada fell to 2-11-1, 0-4 — the only team in the WAC without any conference wins.

"We were overlooking them and that is always, always a mistake," Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. "Hopefully their attitude is much different Sunday than it was today."

The Rainbow Wahine continue WAC play against Boise State tomorrow at 5 p.m.

For the second time in three games, the Rainbow Wahine squandered a two-goal lead.

On their last road trip, Hawai'i lost to WAC leader SMU, 3-2, after leading 2-0.

Kai scored her first goal last night on a penalty kick after being taken down by Tarpenning in the 57th minute.

The penalty kick was set up by a pass Takeyama, who chipped a ball over the heads of the Nevada defense, leaving Kai open down the field. Tarpenning took Kai out — and received a yellow card — setting up the penalty kick opportunity. Kai's shot went into the right side of the goal.

Takeyama scored in the 65th minute when a pass from Bohlman bounced off a Nevada defender's head, and Takeyama outraced a defender, beat Tarpenning with a touch, and shot the ball into an open goal.

"I had so much chances in the beginning, I knew I had to score," said Takeyama, who celebrated her 19th birthday yesterday. "I knew I had to make a quick move and score."

Nevada midfielder Naomi Hernandez scored goals in the 70th and 81st minutes to even the game and send it into overtime.

"The game was the most important game of the season, to me," Takeyama said. "It was very important we didn't lose or tie."
