Manners fractures ankle

EL PASO, Texas — The hits just keep on coming to a University of Hawai'i defense that is already hobbled and showing it.

Manners
Free safety Lono Manners, the team's third-leading tackler entering last night's 51-20 loss to Texas-El Paso, was the latest defensive starter to be lost.

Manners suffered what a team spokesman said was a fractured right ankle in the first half and head coach June Jones said he fears Manners might be lost for the season.

In addition, left cornerback Abraham Elimimian left the game with 8 minutes, 8 seconds remaining in the third quarter with what UH said was a strained right hamstring. Elimimian is expected back for the San Jose State game Saturday.

UH was already playing without middle linebacker Ikaika Curnan and right cornerback Kenny Patton, who were home with injuries.

"We're kind of beat up right now, but guess what, San Jose (State) is coming to town next week and we have to get it corrected," Jones said.

Quarterback Tim Chang left with a sprained left shoulder suffered in a late hit and is expected back for San Jose as is receiver Ian Sample, who also had a sprained left shoulder.
