Rainbow guard Taylor cleared to play

Rainbow Wahine basketball guard Janevia Taylor said she has been cleared to practice after medical tests showed the chest pain she experienced a week ago following conditioning drills was not serious.

Taylor
Taylor, a 5-foot-5 sophomore from Riverside, Calif., played in the Midnight Ohana intrasquad scrimmage early yesterday and said she felt fine afterward.

Taylor said she experienced chest pains and breathing problems after the team's final conditioning tests on Oct. 8.

"It was minor," said Taylor, who made the All-Western Athletic Conference Freshman team last season. "I just ran a few (medical) tests to make sure it wasn't nothing more than just a little chest pain."

Taylor said the tests included a treadmill test, and she said a cardiologist explained the results and "told me I was clear."

First-year Hawai'i coach Jim Bolla said that Taylor was kept out of drills as a precaution. She was medically cleared on Friday, he said.

In other news, swing player Amy Sanders said she is recovering from a strained right hamstring that she injured during the summer.

Sanders, a 5-foot-11 junior from Huntington Beach, Calif., participated in the Midnight Ohana 3-point shooting contest, but was held out of the intrasquad scrimmage.

Sanders said she could resume practicing as early as Tuesday with light conditioning and jogging.

• Solia shines in intrasquad scrimmage: Sophomore swing player Dalia Solia scored a game-high eight points in the intrasquad scrimmage.

Solia's Green team tied the White team, 17-17, in overtime. The scrimmage lasted 11 minutes.

Solia, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Kaimuki High School, shot 4 of 6 from the field and had three steals. Junior swing player Brittney Aiwohi and sophomore forward Amber Lee led the White team with four points each.

• Roper on coaching staff: Former Rainbow Wahine Christen Roper will serve as an undergraduate coach until she finishes her degree in December, Bolla said. Roper also is "seriously considering" an opportunity to play basketball in China, Bolla said.

Roper is the second former Rainbow Wahine on Bolla's staff. Natasja (Allen) Odermann joined the staff as an assistant coach.
