Ex-'Bow English cut by Sonics

Advertiser Staff and Wire

Former University of Hawai'i standout Carl English was released by the Seattle SuperSonics yesterday.

English, a 6-foot-5 guard, was attempting to make the team as a free agent.

He was on Seattle's roster for two preseason games, but had limited playing time in only one game. He scored three points in five minutes in Seattle's 92-73 loss at Portland last Wednesday.

It is the second consecutive year that English was released by an NBA team. Last season, he was among the final cuts of the Indiana Pacers, and wound up playing for the Charleston Lowgators of the National Basketball Developmental League.

English left Hawai'i after his junior season in 2002-03. He is the No. 7 scorer in UH history with 1,259 points.

Guard David Young, Seattle's second round draft choice, was also released yesterday.

Former UH point guard Anthony Carter is with the Minnesota Timberwolves this season, and is now the only former UH player in the NBA.

Knee surgery may end guard Williams' season

Toronto Raptors point guard Alvin Williams lost his starting job because of an injured right knee. Now, he's worried he might need season-ending surgery.

"Right now, I'm not even practicing," Williams said yesterday.

Williams missed Toronto's first preseason game on Friday and won't play today against Philadelphia. He doesn't have much cartilage left in the knee, and he thinks an operation that will sideline him for six months is inevitable.

ELSEWHERE

Hawks: Atlanta forward Chris Crawford will miss the entire season because of a torn ligament in his right knee. Crawford was injured Thursday during an exhibition game in Birmingham, Ala., when he was fouled by Minnesota's Kevin Garnett as Crawford tried to convert a steal into a transition basket.

Pistons: Detroit coach Larry Brown missed last night's preseason game with Miami after complaining that he wasn't feeling well. Brown, who remained in Detroit, is expected to coach the Pistons today when they return home to play Minnesota. Miami beat Detroit, 83-74.
