TENNIS

BYUH's Liu wins women's singles title

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's top-seeded Jing Jing Liu defeated Victoria Weltz of Lynn, 6-4, 6-2, to win the Division II women's singles championship at the ITA National Small College Championships yesterday at Ft. Myers, Fla.

Liu then advanced to the "Super Bowl" of small college tennis pitting the champions of NCAA II, NCAA III, NAIA, and NJCAA against each other and faced Lindsay Hagerman of NCAA III Washington.

Ahead 6-3, 5-4, Liu was one point from winning the match before she withdrew because the finals of the "Super Bowl" are scheduled today and BYU-Hawai'i and its sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have a policy of not participating in athletic events on the Sabbath.

Liu and Adrienn Hegedus then did the same thing in the semifinal doubles portion of the "Super Bowl," withdrawing at match point while leading Liz Bondi and Elizabeth Steel of NCAA III DePauw 6-4, 5-2.

Also, BYUH's Dorian Porada defeated Peter Veslosky of Dowling, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, for seventh place in the men's consolation round.

Idaho's Kevin Burton leads at 69—203. Other Hawai'i golfers were Brian Sasada (72—218, tie 58th), Matthew Pakkala (76—291, 66th) and John Lynch (80—224, 80th).

CROSS COUNTRY

UH women, BYUH men win coed meet

The Hawai'i women's cross country team and the Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's team captured the UH Coed-Sprint Invitational yesterday at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.

Hawai'i placed five runners among the top seven finishers, including freshman Sabrina Reeve, who finished second overall with a time of 14:34 in the four-kilometer race.

BYUH's Chelsea Smith, the defending NCAA Division II national champion, won the race in 14:24.

BYUH won the five-kilometer men's race. BYUH's Jacob Rushton won in 16:17.
