State's public libraries mark 'Teen Read Week'

Local storytellers and guest speakers will be featured in free programs at selected sites state-

wide as the Hawai'i State Public Library celebrates "Teen Read Week," this week through Saturday.

"It's Alive! @ Your Library" is the theme of this year's "Teen Read Week," with the focus on reading mystery, forensics, science fiction and horror books for the fun of it.

Here is the program schedule:

• Author Jeff Mariotte presents "Fright Writer" at Mililani Public Library (today, 6:30 p.m.), Waikiki-Kapahulu (tomorrow, 3 p.m.), Salt Lake-Moanalua (Wednesday, 2:30 p.m.), Kapolei (Wednesday, 6:30 p.m.), 'Aina Haina (Thursday, 3 p.m.), Hawai'i State Library young adult section (Thursday, 6 p.m.).

• Storyteller Kathy Collins, "Tita Tells Spooky Stories Local Style," at the following libraries on Maui: Kihei (tomorrow, 7 p.m.), Wailuku (Thursday, 6:30 p.m.), Kahului (Friday, 10 a.m.), Lahaina (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.).

• Storyteller Woody Fern, tales of Hawaiian monarchy, at Kaimuki (tomorrow, 4 p.m.), Manoa (Tuesday, 6 p.m.), Kalihi-Palama (Wednesday, 3:30 p.m.), Salt Lake-Moanalua (Thursday, 3:30 p.m.), Thelma Parker on the Big Island (Friday, 11 a.m.), Hawai'i State Library's young adult section (Saturday, 12:30 p.m.).

• Storyteller Sandra MacLees does folk tales, fables, myths, legends with drama and humor, at Lana'i (today, 1:45 p.m.); Waimea, Kaua'i (tomorrow, 2:30 p.m.); Kailua, Hawai'i (Wednesday, 3:30 p.m.).

• Storyteller/balladeer James McCarthy at Moloka'i (Wednesday, 2:30 p.m.), Wahiawa (Thursday, 2:30 p.m.).

• Film historian Steven Frederick presents "It's Alive! The Return of Famous Monsters of Filmland" Thursday at Kailua, 6:30 p.m.

• Storyteller Dann Seki performs spooky stories at 'Aiea, Thursday, 6:30 p.m.
