Lambert, partner win beach volleyball finale

Mike Lambert and Eric Fonoimoana defeated Todd Rogers and Sean Scott, 21-18, 21-17, to win the men's title yesterday at the Santa Barbara (Calif.) Invitational, the final stop on the pro beach volleyball tour.

It was Lambert's fourth career title — all this year — including three with Karch Kiraly. Lambert and Scott are Punahou School graduates. Kiraly has been recovering from shoulder surgery since last month.

The Lambert-Kiraly team finished first in the Association of Volleyball Professionals rankings. Lambert earned $71,163 this season.

Athens Olympics gold medalists Misty May and Kerri Walsh defeated Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs, 14-21, 21-14, 15-13, to win the women's title. McPeak and Youngs finished No. 1 in the AVP season rankings.

Each of the winning teams yesterday split $15,000. The runner-ups split $10,000.

Punahou alums Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong tied for third.



GOLF

Hayashi advances to Club Pro nationals

Hilo's Kevin Hayashi shot a 1-over-par 73 for a 287 and tied for 27th at the Western PGA Club Professional Championship in Patterson, Calif., yesterday.

Kevin Burton of Boise, Idaho, was the medalist after a 70-273. The top 32 golfers (of the 144 entered) advanced to next year's national championship at Kiawah Island, S.C., June 23 to 26.

Hayashi, a teaching pro at Mauna Kea Resort, earned $1,137.50.

Kahului's Brian Sasada (79-297), Kailua, Kona's D. Matthew Pakkala (79-298) and Kane'ohe's John Lynch (74-298) failed to advance.



FOOTBALL

Kamehameha moves into tie with Saint Louis

The Kamehameha offense, dormant for three quarters, erupted for 27 consecutive points in the final quarter to beat Punahou, 39-21, Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.

With its passing game ineffective, Kamehameha turned to running back Jayson Rego, who rushed 30 times for 192 yards and four touchdowns.

Kamehameha (3-1, 5-1-1) moved into a first-place tie with Saint Louis (3-1, 5-2) in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I.

The Warriors scored in the fourth quarter on Rego's 21-yard run, Pono Kam's 3-yard quarterback sneak, Ikaika Hardie's 90-yard punt return and a 1-yard run by Rego.

Punahou is 1-3 and 3-4.



MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

'Mayhem' Miller rules at Super Brawl 37

Jason "Mayhem" Miller of Atlanta defeated Kalihi's Ron Jhun in the main event of the Super Brawl 37 mixed martial arts card at the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park on Saturday.

Miller forced Jhun to submit with a side-choke midway through the third round. Miller improved to 10-3 and won the vacant 170-pound championship of the Super Brawl organization. Jhun dropped to 22-13-2.

In preliminary bouts:

Corey Ferriera defeated Nick Gersaba (submission, first round); Bryson Kamaka defeated Paulo Kamakuaina (TKO, second round); Mark Oshiro defeated Gerald Arevalo (triangle choke submission, first round); Kevin Delima defeated Kaipo Gonzales (rear-naked choke, second round); Kai Kamaka defeated Tony Espita (kick, first round); Anthony Torres defeated Shawn Taylor (knee strikes, first round).
